Is there a way to turn a normal, cheap computer USB mouse into an infrared mouse?

Is it possible to convert a USB mouse so that it can communicate with a computer through infrared? I am interested in the educational value. I do not care to buy a wireless mouse.

1. Maybe cut the 4 wire USB cable.
2. Add infrared LED + Infrared Photodetector and interface circuit.
3. Then add batteries to mouse to power infrared LED + Infrared Photodetector and interface circuit.

4a. Point mouse at infrared receiver at all times during mousing operation, because reflections from objects causing interference.
4b. Add shielding tubes around Infrared transmitter and receiver.

5. Add fiberoptic cable to bridge the gap between mouse and USB plug in order to increase reliability.

Aaah!! tethered again, just like before.
